The Island Car Club Sprint and Hillclimb Championship concluded recently with the final round of the series at Ġnejna.

With the championship issue still undecided in various categories, races at the picturesque hill were always going to be hotly-contested.

Group six was wide open with Hubert Camilleri, in his Chevron B43, showing great skills not only in his driving, which is known to all, but also in handling all the situations that arise along the way.

Runs started at a swift pace with Zach Zammit posting a 35.380 in his Jagger Ralt, followed by Steve Zammit Cutajar and Jason Muscat, at 35.800 and 36.456, respectively.

In the meantime, Mark Galea, David Galea and James Dunford were leading Groups 3, 2 and 1, all three in Subaru Imprezas.

As the road gummed down, Zammit produced times in the 34-second zone. He maintained his lead throughout as Zammit Cutajar followed at 35.103 with Camilleri placing third at 35.300.

Having opted to skip the first run for tactical reasons, Camilleri soon found out that the move had paid off as he garnered enough incident-free points to clinch the championship for an incredible 11th time.

In other classes, Jason Muscat placed first in Group 5, Mark Galea and David Galea maintained their positions in Groups 3 and 2 and Dunford topped Group 1.

The 2010 season was notable for the introduction of new events, the most significant of which was the return of the Mtaħleb hillclimb.

The Island Car Club was also entrusted with the running of other events last year, including the Valletta GP, Paqpaqli għall-Istrina and the Gozo Grand Sprint.
