Twenty volunteers are needed to work in an English language programme for kindergarten children at Zabbar 'A' primary school. The volunteers are needed for two 60- to 90-minute sessions each week during the first term of the school year from September to December.

The volunteers must be native English speakers, feel comfortable working with young children and have an interest in education. After initial training, they will be guided to follow a set programme, which will include reading to the children, speaking in English, playing language games and using pictorial aids.

The programme is being launched by the English-Speaking Union (ESU) Malta branch in conjunction with the Education Directorate and the University's Centre for Literacy.

ESU Malta steering committee member Bernie Mizzi said "This is an initial pilot programme which we intend to extend not just within this school to other classes, possibly to Year 1 and Year 2, but also to other schools."
