Opposition leader Simon Busuttil this evening promised that, as prime minister, he would publish contracts which the present government was hiding, saying the government was not true to its promise of transparency.

Speaking at the opening of PN Independence anniversary celebrations in Valletta, Dr Busuttil said transparency and honesty were among the most prominent of Labour's pre-election promises which were not being honoured.

The government's deal on the new power station and its agreement with the Jordanian investors who will open a university were among examples of agreements which had been kept under wraps, even though they even included the transfer of power generation facilities and public land respectively, Dr Busuttil observed.

The people had also been promised an honest government, but got institutional corruption instead, Dr Busuttil continued. It was political dishonesty which started when Labour made promises it knew it could not keep, he said. He mentioned the Gaffarena property case as an example of dishonest politics and observed that despite the outcry, the Parliamentary Secretary for lands, Michael Falzon, had been retained.

Labour's slogan of  ‘Malta Taghna Lkoll’ slogan had turned out to be a lie and a joke, and the people were now seeing a Malta restricted to the chosen few, Dr Busuttil said.

He also referred to the termination of work of cardiologist Albert Fenech and said this was a vindictive act. This was an example, but for from the only one, of how Labour had not kept another of its promises - that of working with everybody who wanted to work with it, even if they were not political allies.

Dr Busuttil said the PN was working to regain the people's confidence as an honest political party and a reliable alternative government. He was confident that the people would eventually see through what was happening at present and view the PN as the party with the real vision to move the country forward.
