Theresa Brousson added the Marsa Open title to her recent Malta Open, confirming her position as the leading female player in the local scene.

The first ladies' semi-final saw young Colette Sultana take on the experienced Brousson.

Sultana put in a brave effort but never really pushed Brousson who controlled the match from start to finish.

The second semi-final was a thriller. Johanna Rizzo, Malta's no.2 player, came up against Dominica Witkowska, the Polish number 1.

Witkowska had never beaten Rizzo before but has worked hard in the last 12 months, improving her stroke play and tactical awareness.

Rizzo, always a fighter, put up a great display of athleticism and fought for five hard sets. In the end, however, Witkowska was able to stay cool and play the better shots at the right time to book her place in the final with a well-deserved 3-2 victory.

The final pitted the Maltese champion against her Polish counterpart. Witkowska started well but Brousson was in no mood to allow the Polish champion to spoil her day.

Brousson played a controlled match but relaxed slightly in the third, giving Witkowska a small chance. However, Brousson delivered a display of accuracy and control in the fourth set to take the match and the title 3-1.

In the third place play-off Sultana produced an impressive technical display, moving her 'aunt' Rizzo around the court to take third place 3-2. This was the first time the youngster had beaten Rizzo in a competitive match.

The two men's semi-finals went with the seeding.

Derek Collins, the no.1 seed from Newcastle, and Carl Camilleri, the second seed from Marsa, both won comfortably 3-0 against Karl Grech Orr and Robert Sultana respectively. Sultana then emulated daughter Colette's earlier performance by defeating Grech Orr to claim third place.

The men's final was a repeat of Thursday's team match where Camilleri was the surprise winner against Collins. This time, Collins had other ideas.

From the very first point, he attacked the ball and put Camilleri under constant pressure with controlled tight shots. Camilleri looked the more nervous of the two and was unable to take advantage of the few opportunities that came his way, allowing Collins to dominate the match and clinch the title.

Dave Watson, Newcastle's team captain, thanked everyone at the Marsa Sports Club for a week of 'great squash and perfect hospitality' and commented that the 'Oids' are already planning next year's trip to Marsa.
