Birkirkara will take on Andorra's FC Santa Coloma in the first qualifying round of the Champions League.

The Maltese champions have been drawn to play the first leg away on June 29 with the return at the Centenary Stadium a week later.

With only four teams in the draw, held in Nyon yesterday, Birkirkara's potential opponents were FC Santa Coloma or San Marino champions Tre Fiori, the two seeded sides. Tre Fiori have been paired with FK Rudar Pljevlja, of Montenegro.

Paul Zammit, the Birkirkara coach, is cautiously optimistic about his team's prospects of advancing to the second qualifying round and a two-legged tie with Slovak champions MSK Zilina.

"We knew that in Q1, our chances of competing against the two seeded teams were good, regardless of the outcome of the draw," Zammit told The Times.

"I believe that if we continue to prepare well for these commitments, we are capable of producing a creditable challenge for a place in the second qualifying round.

"FC Santa Coloma have a host of Spanish and Argentine players in their squad and they will not be easy opponents. I expect two finely-poised legs."

FC Santa Coloma have dominated Andorran football since the turn of the millennium, winning the title five times in the last decade.

Yet, they have been unable to translate their domestic success into a sustained run in Europea as they have never progressed beyond the first round.

Last year, Birkirkara suffered a narrow 1-0 aggregate loss to Croatia's NK Slaven Koprivnica in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.

Valletta, runners-up to Birkirkara and winners of the FA Trophy last season, must wait until July 8 to know their opponents after they were drawn against the winner of the first qualifying round tie between FC Shakhtyor Karagandy, of Kazakhstan, and Poland's KS Ruch Chorzow.

Valletta play the first leg at the Centenary Stadium on July 15 with the away leg a week later.

The Citizens have pleasant memories of their Europa League campaign last year as they overcame Icelandic side Keflavik 5-2 to set up a meeting with Ireland's St Patrick's in the second qualifying round.

After an encouraging 1-1 draw in Dublin, Valletta went down to a late Declan O'Brien goal at the Centenary Stadium.

Sliema Wanderers, the other Maltese team in the draw, were not so lucky as they were pitted against Croatia's HNK Sibenik who had the 12th best coefficient of the 52 teams involved in the first qualifying round.

The Blues will travel to Croatia for the first leg, on July 1, before hosting Sibenik at the Centenary Stadium on July 8. The winner of the Sibenik-Sliema tie will face either Anorthosis Famagusta (Cyprus) or FC Banants (Armenia) in the next round.

Last season, Sliema succumbed to a 3-0 aggregate defeat to Israel's Maccabi Netanya in the second qualifying round of the Europa League.
