Giroud: Arsenal have appealed against the red card shown to Olivier Giroud during Saturday’s 1-0 league victory over Fulham. French striker Giroud was dismissed by referee Andre Marriner in the 90th minute at Craven Cottage for jumping into a challenge with Stanislav Manolev.
Montpellier: Former Ligue 1 coach of the year Jean Fernandez is to take charge at Montpellier next season. “Jean Fernandez will succeed Rene Girard as coach as of July 1,” the champions said . Montpellier added that the 59-year-old would sign a two-year deal.
Warner: Ex-FIFA vice president Jack Warner resigned as Trinidad national security minister, just days after an investigation accused him of “fraudulent” mana-gement of the CONCACAF confe-deration. Warner was accused at a congress in Panama of tricking the body that represents soccer in North America, Central America and the Caribbean out of ownership of the $26m Centre of Excellence in Port of Spain.
Banned: Viking have suspended midfielder Makhtar Thioune for two games for accusing a referee of racism. Thioune was booked for a first-half tackle against Brann Bergen on Saturday and subse-quently substituted in the second half of the Norwegian cham-pionship game, which Bergen won 2-0. Thioune said: “It was a personal and racist matter with the referee. That’s why it was better I went off.”
