Renault team manager Flavio Briatore has reportedly put off a decision on the French squad's line-up for the 2008 season.

Auto Motor und Sport said the Italian wants to see how his drivers perform in an improved Renault, due out in a few weeks. But he may also be waiting to see if former protege Fernando Alonso could be attracted back from McLaren.

Alonso defected to McLaren at the beginning of the current season but his switch was announced by McLaren soon after Alonso won his first of two championships with Renault. Briatore would like nothing better than to return the compliment to McLaren.

Although Alonso's contract with McLaren is still young, it is thought that it can be voided if McLaren are found guilty in the industrial espionage case due to be heard by the FIA tomorrow.

The Spaniard is said to be unhappy at McLaren and the body language between him and team boss Ron Dennis on Sunday seemed to confirm as much, but clearly Alonso would like to be with a team which can produce winning cars. Renault are going through a difficult period, but they will argue that McLaren were in the same position last year and things turn around very quickly in F1.

Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen currently occupy the Renault race seats, with test driver Nelson Piquet Jr very much in the frame for a drive should Alonso not return.

Rookie Kovalainen had a difficult start to the season but has since improved significantly, on occasion producing better results than veteran Giancarlo Fisichella.
