A walkathon organised by TV presenter Rennie Vella, in aid of the Action for Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF), was held from Spinola Bay to Msida Marina.

The walkathon was organised to promote the need for Herceptin to be provided free-of-charge to cancer patients.

Herceptin-receptive tumours are more aggressive than other forms of breast cancer, and although only a small percentage of women are diagnosed with this type of cancer, Herceptin treatment is an opportunity that could prevent it from spreading.

A one-year course of Herceptin costs about €41,928 and some women are unfairly forced to take out bank loans to pay for the treatment.

Among those who supported the walkathon were the Sliema Salesian Boys and Girls Brigade, Valletta FC, Gaffiero Mon Lung Kung Fu club Sliema, House of Grace, Valletta Football Club, the Girl Guides Association, the Federation of Pigeon Racing, and Angela Formosa from Soroptimist International.

Claudette Pace, Joe Cassar, parliamentary secretary for health, Michelle Muscat, wife of Labour Leader Joseph Muscat and Frida Cauchi also attended the event.
