Easyline Division One

Victoria Hotspurs 0
Nadur Youngsters 2

Leaders Nadur Youngsters needed 45 minutes to make sure of the three points in their match against Victoria Hotspurs.

On their part, Victoria were aiming to gain at least a point to attain mathematical certainty of maintaining their Division One status.

Assuming the initiative from the early stages, Nadur had Victoria under pressure for most of the first half.

Nadur's Farrugia had a good attempt well saved by goalkeeper Vella in the sixth minute. Moments later, two efforts by Emanuel Muscat ended just wide.

The Youngsters maintained the momentum and opened the scoring in the 23rd minute thanks to an excellent header by Bizu from a free-kick by John Vella.

Nadur kept insisting and Anthony Portelli concluded badly from a good position in the 28th minute.

Victoria's best scoring opportunity during the match arrived in the 40th minute when Isaac Mopi's drive forced Nadur goalkeeper Kevin Vella into a spectacular save.

During stoppage time of the first half, Nadur practically sealed the issue with a second goal from Bizu following a personal action.

After the change of ends, Victoria tried to cancel out the deficit but Nadur controlled well and kept the danger away from their area.

The Youngsters continued to be the more dangerous side, especially on the counter-attack, but Muscat, Camilleri and Bizu missed chances to increase their team's winning margin.

Xewkija Tigers 3
Xaghra United 0

Xewkija Tigers moved up to third in the league standings following a 3-0 victory over Xaghra United.

This result has practically decided the relegation issue as Xaghra now seem odds on to be demoted to Division Two with Qala St Joseph.

Goalmouth action was a rare commodity in a balanced first half that saw both defences prevailing over the respective strikers.

Proceedings livened up in the second period with Xewkija taking full advantage of their opponents' slack defending to score three goals without reply.

It was Sabri Rais who broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a spectacular shot from outside the area.

Xaghra staged a good reaction but failed to pose any danger to their opponents' goal. Ten minutes from the end of normal time, Jeffrey Farrugia made it 2-0 for Xewkija, poking the ball home from close distance after good work on the flank by promising youngster Joseph Cefai.

Four minutes later, Xewkija scored their third and final goal through substitute Gothard Conti following a pass by Rais.

Sprite Division Two - Sannat maintain runners-up position

Sannat Lions managed to hold on to their runners-up position by obtaining four points from their last two matches.

During the week, Sannat Lions were held to a 2-2 draw by Kercem Ajax in a direct clash for the second spot in the table.

Sannat enjoyed the better start to the game and surged into a two-goal lead through Mark Muscat (18th) and Mark Formosa (67th).

The Lions spurned a hatful of scoring opportunities and, to add insult to injury, their goalkeeper Galea committed an own goal to hand Kercem a lifeline four minutes from time. Kercem profited from the Lions' momentary crisis and two minutes later, they were awarded a penalty which was converted by Christian Sylvester for a final 2-2 scoreline.

Sannat Lions atoned for their disappointing draw with Kercem by beating bottom-placed St Lawrence Spurs 3-1.

The Lions found it more difficult than expected to break down St Lawrence's defence but Abdul El Mutalib eased their nerves with a second-half hat-trick.

Sixteen minutes from time, the Spurs were reduced to ten men after Kolawole was sent off for a second yellow card.

St Lawrence scored a consolation goal in the 84th minute thanks to a Josef Galea penalty.

Division Two leaders Gharb Rangers had the better of Oratory Youths by the odd goal in three.

Gharb nosed ahead in the 36th minute through Philip Bajada but George Vella levelled matters for Oratory in the 65th minute.

The Rangers pushed forward for a winning goal and their efforts were rewarded in the 77th minute courtesy of John Cassar.
