As part of a project St Theresa College's Birkirkara Primary School has with a school in the southern German town of Friedrichshafen, close to Lake Constance, the year 5A class recently went on a tour of their Birkirkara's historical buildings.

The project involved the pupils making paper 'Flat Stanleys', writing a journal. They sent their work to the German school where pupils treat the Flat Stanleys as their guest. The German students then added their own entries in the journal and returned them both to Malta.

The pupils were accompanied by their teacher Rita Briffa, assistant head of school Alex Cassar who also acted as guide and photographer, and by Ludivine Chappaz and Aurelie Dozoul, two French teachers who were visiting the school as part of a Comenius project.

On their tour, the pupils first visited a niche in Mrieħel Road built around 1814 to commemorate victims of plague, which is found near the football ground built on a former Tal-Infetti cemetery.

They proceded to the old church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption where they were greeted by the parish priest who gave them booklets about the church's history. They continued walking to Mrieħel to see the Wignacourt acquaduct. The next stop was at the old railway station, now a public garden, where the children stopped to have their lunch.

The children then walked all the way to the town's basilica where they received the red carpet treatment.

The church was lit up like a feast day so that the children could admire the beautiful ceiling paintings by Virginio Monti depicting the life of the town's patron, St Helen.

The final stop was at the restored Ta' Ganu Windmill where artist and ceramist Gabriel Caruana works and exhibits other artists' works.
