With the festa season being with us and the work on the street decorations proceeding in earnest, and as most of this work is being carried out at night, may one appeal to the authorities to ensure that the use of a yellow flashing beacon light on all vehicles used in the fitting of the decorations is made compulsory.

The same also applies to the wearing of yellow reflective vests by all involved.

This should also apply to those carrying out night maintenance street work including the night refuse collection contractors.

I was recently driving through the main road in Sta Venera and noticed the refuse contractor's truck with very dim rear lights and no brake lights, stopping every few feet without warning, and with his helpers darting in and out between moving vehicles collecting waste bags.

Local councils should insist that rules are adhered to and compliance should be a major factor when awarding any such contracts.

This action, I am sure, will stop the serious accident which is just waiting to happen as the main problem seems to be that the people involved in these activities know the roads but forget that this is not necessarily the case with all other drivers using these roads.

Surely it is, as the saying goes, better safe than sorry!
