With grim news on the worldwide economic downturn making headlines every day, few people would think that a smart phone could come to the rescue of many a company struggling to keep costs down.

The mobile communication sector is increasingly seen as an ally in the quest of keeping people in touch, working together, being productive, and at a lower cost of ownership than other communication solutions or flying out to meetings.

RIM's BlackBerry smartphone, recently launched in Malta through Vodafone, is exactly what companies need right now.

"The current economic situation will certainly have an effect on all sectors; but given that BlackBerry helps in increasing productivity with a low total cost of ownership, businesses will look at the BlackBerry from Vodafone solution as one way of increasing efficiency," according to Michael Darmanin, head of business at Vodafone Malta.

The BlackBerry from Vodafone solution gives an organisation access to so much more than e-mail. It can be used to access tools, information and applications unique to a specific business and its processes. On the other hand this solution allows organisations to keep their employees connected to the information and people that matter. It gives employees the flexibility to work from anywhere at any time. In addition it empowers employees to use travel or waiting time to access information, respond instantly to enquiries or work more efficiently out of the office.

BlackBerry is not the only smartphone or PDA available on the market, but it is the most popular solution used by business organisations around the world, with 19 million customers in over 100 countries.

"BlackBerry has a long-standing experience within the corporate sector," explained Mr Darmanin. "What differentiates the BlackBerry solution from others is the fact that the smartphone and the software integration is done by one provider as opposed to other solutions available. The BlackBerry from Vodafone solution also includes the strongest security available on the market in an out-of-the-box mobile solution. It offers an end-to-end security model, trusted by security-conscious organisations. No other wireless solution holds claim to as many wireless security certifications."

Vodafone Malta is offering BlackBerry Enterprise Server for corporate customers, BlackBerry Professional Software for growing businesses and BlackBerry Internet Service for smaller business and individuals.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server is targeted specifically for organisations that manage their own e-mail servers. This tightly integrates with IBM Lotus Domino, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise and uses advanced encryption and IT policy controls to enable secure, push-based wireless access to e-mail and other corporate data.

BlackBerry Professional Software is for businesses that manage their own e-mail server and have up to 30 mobile employees. It's easy to set up and control and combines the right mix of features. It's ideal for growing businesses wanting a combination of enterprise features and low cost.

BlackBerry Internet Service is designed for smaller businesses and individuals. It allows customers to access up to 10 supported corporate and personal e-mail accounts.
