The Birzebbuga section committee of the Nationalist Party yesterday in a resolution urged the government not to consider Benghajsa as the site for a possible landfill.

The site currently tops the list of proposed sites along with L-Ghallis ta` Gewwa, not far from the existing dump at Maghtab.

The resolution, approved at a general meeting, observed that the Benghajsa site did not meet one of the criteria laid down for the development of a new landfill, in that it was not a valley, needed so that when the landfill was full, it would remain below ground level.

The site was also at one end of Malta and refuse trucks would therefore have to drive through heavy traffic to reach it.

The site was important from an environmental and agricultural point of view. It was in the midst of an industrial area where hundreds of workers worked every day and was close to the residences of those who made up the Benghajsa rural community.

The committee said it appreciated that a landfill was needed for the common good and that no decision on its location had been taken yet.
