Bathing water quality was high around Malta and Gozo last year, reaching 98.9 percent of the EU's mandatory values, a report issued by the EU today shows. This was an increase of 3.4% over 2007.

It said that 94.3 percent of bathing waters (82 sites) met the more stringent guide values, an increase of 4.6 percent over the previous year.

Only one bathing water site was non-compliant with mandatory values, compared to four in 2007. No area was closed for the entire bathing season.

The EU said compliance with mandatory values across the bloc increased to 96%.
