Malta Squash have just organised their third major tournament of the year - the Cynergi Open, played at the fitness centre in St Julian's.
Twenty-six players took part, split into two categories. The A tournament, open to national team players and those from the top division, saw veteran Ivan Balzan emerge victorious after beating Carl Camilleri 3-2 in the final.
Balzan was trailing 0-2 at one point but regrouped to clinch the next three games with the decider finishing 11-9.
On his way to the final, Balzan beat Adrian Camilleri 3-0 and was awarded a walk-over in the third as Martin Mallia retired injured.
Camilleri had a more difficult passage on the other side of the draw, having to fend off the determined challenge of Robert Sultana and the much-improved Nigel Dunkerley. Camilleri won both games 3-2.
The well-attended B tournament, saw the towering Daniel Ahlander exploit his long reach to beat Jonathan Sammut 3-0 in the final.
Prizes were handed out to the winners and runners-up by Cynergi Fitness Centre manager Alan Pace and Malta Squash president Liz Said.
The next tournament will be the much-awaited Malta International Open at the Marsa Sports Club. Over 60 players are expected to take part.
