A record number of competitors assembled under a glorious spring sun in Mellieħa on Sunday for the Island Car Club's third round of the season - the Ta' Penellu Sprint.

In all, there were 73 entries, ranging from budget stripped-out projects to impeccably-sculpted carbon fibre racers, all taking their turns to roar up the hill, thrilling the numerous spectators present for what many consider as the season's most demanding race in the calendar.

Competition started with the first runs. Despite the modest resurfacing efforts undertaken recently, the mid-corner undulations in the fast upper section were still there, unbalancing cars and giving drivers a hard time to keep on the racing line at speeds of over 150 kph.

The final standings showed a remarkable performance by the production cars and their drivers, a few also posting better times than some single-seaters.

The most notable was David Galea in his Stone Art-sponsored Subaru Impreza. He was the fastest production car racer in Group 2 followed by Joseph Cutajar (Escort) and Edward Calleja in his Honda-powered Lotus Elise. Cutajar and Calleja took part in the full modified Group 3.

Anthony Bernard was second in Group 2 while the fastest Group 1 racer was Jonathan Tonna, again in a Subaru Impreza, sponsored by Forch Tools & Consumables.

For a remarkable third time in as many races, overall honours went to Hubert Camilleri, sponsored by Mclaren Garage/Virtu Ferries/Silkolene. He was followed by Alan Curmi, of J&J Curmi, and Varta-sponsored Steve Zammit Cutajar in third place.

Despite the large number of novice entries, the day passed with minimal incidents apart from a couple of harmless spins resulting in nothing more than bruised egos, evidence that safety standards imposed by the organisers on all competitors are reaping dividends.

All contestants managed four runs, a logistical triumph for the club officials, and a treat to spectators who witnessed over 100 runs in a single session.

The club's next race will be held in Xagħra, Gozo on May 23.
