The 51st national championships, organised by the Malta Table Tennis Association, were played last week at the University Sports Hall.

Edward Baldacchino and Christine Cassar Torreggiani are the national 2003 champions after winning their respective men's and women's singles titles.

Baldacchino beat Alex Soler 4-2 in the final, the set scores going 11-6, 11-3, 8-11, 11-4, 12-14, 11-3 for the winner. Cassar Torreggiani had the better of 2002 champion Johanna Grech in five sets - 11-6, 4-11, 11-3, 13-11, 11-4.

Baldacchino then teamed up with Mario Genovese, the national coach and 2002 singles champion, to claim the doubles title at the expense of David Pace and Mark Azzopardi 11-7, 5-11, 7-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 11-6.

The Plate event went to Joe Soler who beat Noel Schembri 11-2, 7-11, 11-7, 6-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-3 while the honour in the Veterans' class went to Alex Anastasi. He beat his former Malta team-mate Peter Borg Cardona 5-11, 11-8, 8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-9.
