Kimi Raikkonen was comfortably the fastest man on track when free practice started at the Belgian GP in Spa this morning. He set a best time of 1:47.339, which was 0.542 better than second placed Lewis Hamilton of McLaren. Raikkonen won the last two races held in Spa, in 2004 and 2005, with McLaren.
But it was not all plain sailing for Ferrari this morning, with Felipe Massa suffering a mechanical problem and crashing into a wall after just two laps.
Fernando Alonso was third this morning, 0.655 behind Raikkonen, with Nick Heidfeld (BMW) fourth followed by the Williams of Nico Rosberg.
The track was dry.
The teams are expected to do most of their testing this afternoon rather than tomorrow in order to save the race engines since the successive Monza and Spa races place the biggest stress on them in the whole championship. Ferrari, however, can put in a new engine for Massa because of his race withdrawal last Sunday.
