During his visit Down Under, the leader of the opposition promised that a new Labour government would set up a commission to carry out an independent investigation into the experiences suffered by Maltese children who had been sent to Australia in the 1940s and 1950s.

No doubt this proclamation took the political world by surprise and has demonstrated to the world that a future Labour government's policies would be far-reaching indeed: 60 years back in fact! Then what?

What will Alfred Sant do with the findings of the commission? Start a crusade against the perpetrators (presuming they are still alive and kicking), pay any eventual victims of abuse Lm10,000 like he promised Tarcisio Mifsud? What exactly is the point here?

While the Nationalists are doing their utmost to promote this country to EU membership status, a status craved by so many other countries, Dr Sant is jetting around the globe making absurd promises, like the one above, and coming back to Malta telling us that there are countless business opportunities out there.

What all these opportunities are and how Malta will benefit from them, remains a mystery, as he has not told us what they are.

The difference is there for all to see and the choice is there to be made. On one side, we have the present government, not free of defects, but with a clear policy and a vision for the future.

On the other hand, we have an opposition with a great track record of promising everything to all and sundry but then failing to deliver anything as two disastrous years in government proved.
