Malta champion Matthew Asciak has improved his ATP ranking by 300 places after winning two more points in Cairo, bringing his total to three so far. He is now no.1,450 in the list.
In his first tournament, Asciak made it to the main draw, despite a 6-4 6-3 upset to Egypt player Huber 6-4 6-3, thanks to his previous ranking. He beat Italy's Dutto 6-4 6-3 but lost to Morocco's Rachidi 6-4 7-5 in the next round.
In the other competition, after earning a bye Asciak beat Nazir, of Egypt, 6-4 6-3 but failed to find a way past Germany's Altmann losing 6-3 6-3 after a hard-fought match.
Asciak, who will be playing three more Futures in Greece next month, again made it into the main draw as a lucky loser where he beat Mounir, of Egypt, 6-1 6-1. He eventually lost to world no.350 Egyptian Maamoun 6-1 6-1.
Meanwhile, Bradley Callus, another Malta national team player, also played in Cairo for his first taste of international competition.
He teamed up with Asciak in the doubles and they won the first match in the main draw 6-4 7-5 before losing to Altmann and Beidas in the next round.
