The ASA council has recently approved a new procedure for the selection of the season's best players. A panel of voters has been appointed and this includes all council members, referees, national team and Division One coaches and well-known personalities Victor Cachia and Joe Attard.

Three from this panel will be appointed for all Division One and Two matches to select their best three players. Fine performances by national team players during international tournaments will also be taken into consideration.

Journalists will also be invited to vote. However, points awarded by the media representatives will be counted separately. In the end, their tallies will add to 25 per cent of the final voting.

Those accumulating the highest number of votes during the season will be awarded with the Player of the Year trophy. However, players who during the season get suspended for serious offences will be disqualified.

Meanwhile, international referee Mario Dalli has been appointed by the LEN to officiate matches from the European 'B' Championships in Sweden. Dalli will accompany Dirk Dowling's national squad which leaves Malta today for Stockholm. This is the fourth time that Dalli has been appointed by LEN to officiate in the championships.

Malta plays its first match from Group A on Saturday against Denmark. The other teams in the group are Belgium, Belarus and Turkey.
