One of the frequent remarks I am faced with during door-to-door sessions is that this government's arrogance is growing by the minute. On reflecting about it one realises how true such observations are.

The PN act as if they have a natural right to govern this country and will have no objection to attack and try to discredit anyone who tries to contradict them or somehow dents their credibility. Not convinced? Why not ask the likes of the auditor general; Astrid Vella and countless others who have decided to resist the steamroller approach being used.

Arrogance is evinced continuously in the way certain ministers approach what should be an otherwise free press. Apart from the intimidating approach with which these ministers reply to the press, they more often than not dismiss journalists' questions with a simple shrug. It's as if they feel they are not accountable to anyone, not even the electorate!

Once on the subject of accountability, it is unacceptable that this country is faced with cases and alleged cases of irregularity which are conveniently ignored until forgotten by the public at large. Allow me to remind readers of a couple just in case they might have forgotten some of them. Some time back there was a whole fuss about possible leakages relating to a tender for health-related IT services. Apart from some form of police investigations and the arraignment of one official, has there been someone with enough courage and sense of accountability to consider, even if remotely, tendering his/her resignation?

Has the public been informed about the outcome of investigations and the actions taken following the breach of security within the government's computer system and e-mail passwords?

Shouldn't there be more individuals to show a sense of accountability and offer to resign from their post following the massive fraud that has apparently engulfed the VAT department?

Have we been offered clear explanations on what happened in each of these cases? Has any minister shouldered political responsibility? Would such ministers have been retained in employment if they were employees and they messed up so badly? Is the electorate willing to give them an undeserved vote of confidence thereby risking that their arrogance and lack of accountability swell? This question needs to be considered and answered on June 6!
