Malta was represented for the first time in the World Free-Style Wrestling Championships, this year held in Budapest, Hungary.

Our country's sole participant was Abraham Vassallo who entered the 84kg category.

Vassallo's participation means that Malta has now taken part in the whole cycle of top wrestling competitions, namely the Olympic Games, European Championships, Mediterranean Games, Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, Common Market Championships and Small Countries Championships.

In the world championships, Vassallo lost his two encounters on points against Yoel Romero, of Cuba, the eventual silver medal winner in the 84kg class, and Poland's Radoslaw Horbit.

In a statement, the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation (MAWF) said that Vassallo's task in Budapest was always going to be tough especially due to the fact that national coach Jesmond Giordmaina was not there to offer his assistance.

The MAWF pointed out that it is still awaiting payment from the Malta Sports Council for the expenses incurred by the federation in organising the Small Countries Wrestling Championships last year.

Financial constraints meant that the MAWF was not in a position to pay Giordmaina's trip to Budapest.

Vassallo's participation in the World Championships was only possible thanks to the financial support of the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA).
