Chelsea have just completed their first-ever league and cup double after beating Portsmouth in the FA Cup final.

Despite having the wily Jose Mourinho as coach a few years back, Chelsea had failed to win the double before. The feat, however, was achieved last season when Italian Carlo Ancelotti, who won the admiration of players and fans for his positive approach, led the Blues to league and cup triumphs in his first year in England.

In the early days of the English game, the first two doubles were recorded by Preston in 1888-89 and Aston Villa in 1896-97. More than six decades later, Tottenham claimed the double in 1960-61 and Arsenal did it for the first time in 1970-71.

Liverpool won the league and FA Cup double in 1985-86 and they were followed as follows:

1993-94 - Manchester United
1995-96 - Manchester United
1997-98 - Arsenal
1998-99 - Manchester United
2001-02 - Arsenal
2009-10 - Chelsea

Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal will play in the Champions League and Tottenham, who will be making their first appearance in the competition, will be looking to reach the group stages via the qualifying rounds.

Manchester City, Aston Villa and Liverpool are England's representatives in the less glamorous Europa League.

From last season's promoted trio, only Burnley failed to keep their place in the top flight.

They will be joined by Hull and Portsmouth in next season's Championship.
