As a family visiting this island for the first time, we feel in duty bound to share our observations with readers of this newspaper, as we travel through magnificent Malta, Gozo and Comino.

The first and most important observations are the easy-going, happy and engaging islanders we have met. Always willing to talk at length with us and unbelievably friendly with the “Nothing is too much trouble” attitude.

It did not matter whether it was shopkeepers, restaurant staff or the elderly man, who guided us when we were lost travelling through his village. We were constantly greeted with a smile and “you are welcome”.

Another observation has to do with the Maltese people’s use of mobile phones while driving.

In England, although the laws banning the use of mobile phones, unless hands-free, have been in place some years, it is only in recent times that the penalty deterrent has been more effective. It coincided with the increase of the fine of up to £200 and points being deducted on the licence.

Also, if it is a company vehicle being driven by an employee at the time, then the company may also be liable, with a fine of up to £1,000.

Nothing changes people’s attitudes more than a change in the penalty. It has certainly proved the case in England.

We must thank the Maltese people for allowing us to share these beautiful islands with them over the past few weeks.

We certainly hope to come back in the future.
