Algerian English language student Koudil Ryad Areslane, 20, was conditionally discharged for two years for stealing €500 from his former flatmate David Jean Francois Sylvan.

Mr Areslane admitted to having stolen the money but after the police searched his flat, they found seven syringes and a spoon with traces of heroin.

He also admitted to being in possession of heroin.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke jailed Mr Areslane for one year suspended for two. She told him to make sure he sought help for his drug problem.

He agreed and informed the court that he had already spoken to a doctor.
