Readers of The Times have been regaled with Alfred's photos for many years, often without knowing they were his as he was not particularly keen about having his name alongside his pictures.

Being interested in photography myself, I was often amazed at how this unassuming man, who never studied or read anything about photography, could have such a keen eye.

Nothing escaped his attention. There was no need to point him in any particular direction. If there was a photo that had to be taken, he would have already taken it by the time you tried to alert him to it.

He was excellent at capturing action, moods and colours. A few of the pictures which Alfred Giglio shot in recent years for The Times, and can be downloaded as a screensaver by clicking here, can say it much better than I can in a thousand words.

Dear friend and colleague, you're gone, but not forgotten.
