AFM soldiers this morning cleaned-up the Mġiebaħ Bay in Selmun, carrying away sacks of algae by patrol boat.

The bay is not accessible for vehicles.

This operation was carried out following a request for assistance by Transport Malta, the AFM said.

The soldiers helped Cleansing Department employees remove the algae and other items by hand in order not to disturb the  the environment.

Times of Malta reported earlier this month that the clean-up had been delayed because huge amounts of algae were near the beach but had not yet been washed ashore .

“We were waiting for strong winds to bring over these huge amounts ashore so that the difficult cleansing operation will happen once,” she said.
