While appreciating Darren Duncan’s disappointment (The Sunday Times, March 20) one needs to balance the needs of latecomers against the enjoyment of other theatregoers and the requirements of the performers on stage.

The theatre in the round at St James Cavalier is a very intimate space where audience and performer share the same area.

Indeed, as in the case of this production, they also share the same entrances and exits.

Allowing latecomers in can ruin the suspension of disbelief for audiences and can distract the performers.

In addition, it is not always possible for audience members to reach their seat once the performance has begun.

In Mr Duncan’s case, we had a full house, so we had little leeway in finding him alternate seating.

Having said all this, we have taken Mr Duncan’s comments on board and are actively seeking possible solutions.
