A man was charged with threatening his former girlfriend and her sister with a knife during a family argument.

The 23-year-old from Birkirkara pleaded not guilty to threatening the two women on Tuesday morning in Mosta. He was also charged with slightly injuring one of them with a knife.

The accused, who denied all charges, has a young daughter with his ex-girlfriend.

Police sources said an argument broke out and the accused allegedly produced a knife and started waving it.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella issued a protection order for the two women and warned the accused against approaching them or contacting them in any way. The accused was granted bail against a deposit of €1,162 and a personal guarantee of €11,627.

Names are not being used to protect the sisters' identity.

Police Inspector Edmond Cuschieri prosecuted.

Lawyer Chris Cardona was defence counsel.
