A man who allegedly stole €33,000 worth of antiques from a house in San Ġwann and returned them once caught was yesterday granted bail.

Glenn Vella, 29, walked into the court room yesterday visibly agitated and said he did not want his name in the papers.

Mr Vella pleaded not guilty to stealing the items, which include antique silverware, furniture and other decorative items, on November 23 and the preceding weeks. He also denied breaching bail and relapsing.

Defence lawyer Veronique Dalli told the court her client required medical assistance.

She noted that it was with his help that the items allegedly stolen were tracked and returned to their rightful owners, adding that the court should take this into consideration when considering bail.

Police Inspector Michael Mallia said the accused was not trustworthy as he had skipped bail before, besides having a number of other convictions.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli granted him bail against a personal guarantee of €6,000.
