A young man was yesterday charged with using a stolen identity card to sign up for a mobile phone contract, after the person who received the bills contacted the police and the man was captured on a CCTV camera.

Police Inspector Kylie Borg told Magistrate Marseann Farrugia that Daniele Aquilina, 19, from Ta’ Xbiex, had signed up for the contract last month using the card.

The victim contacted the police after he began receiving bills from Go Mobile requesting payment. Mr Aquilina was also caught on a Go outlet camera.

In a search of the defendant’s home, officers found two more identity cards that did not belong to him.

In pleas on bail, defence lawyers David Camilleri and Joseph Gatt said there was no reason to deny it as any evidence was already in police possession.

Inspector Borg said while she had not charged him with breaching bail, he had done so in three separate cases. Magistrate Farrugia remanded him in custody.
