A father and son were yesterday remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to robbing two elderly women on Saturday.

Anthony and Redeemer Theuma, 43 and 26 respectively, from Fgura, denied stealing a purse from 76-year-old Giuseppe Mifsud in Żejtun at 11am and 40 minutes later a purse from 67-year-old Rose Galea in Birżebbuġa.

On Sunday Caroline Haidon, 30, from Marsascala, admitted stealing from the victims and was given a two-year jail term, suspended for four years, and a supervision order.

The men denied committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended jail term.

Magistrate Marseann Farrugia remanded the men in custody.

Police Inspectors Carlos Cordina and Carol Fabri prosecuted. Legal aid lawyer Joseph Ellis appeared for the accused.
