Greenpeace International has acknowledged losing €3.8 million (£3.02 million) on a bet that the euro would not strengthen against other currencies in 2013 – but it did.

The environmental group, which is based in Amsterdam, said the money was lost by an employee who acted beyond the limits of his authority but had hoped to benefit the organisation.

Greenpeace did not identify the employee, who has been fired, and added there was no evidence of fraud. The group apologised for the blunder to supporters and donors, and said it was studying what went wrong.

Race crasher being investigated

Police are investigating a video which appears to show a ordinary car being driven onto a motorsport track during a race.

The driver, who has been named locally as 22 year-old Jack Cottle from Tonbridge, said the incident at the world famous Brands Hatch circuit in Kent on Saturday, had been blown “out of all proportion”.

The white Volkswagen car, carrying two passengers as well as the driver who is referred to throughout the video as Jack, is seen making its way along the track during a race as other cars pass by. The female sitting in the passenger seat asks near the beginning of the three minute 17 second video: “Does anyone not think it’s weird that no-one’s said anything?”

Wee problem for football fans

Soccer fans have a World Cup-sized challenge to find a loo after watching late night games because so many public toilets have closed through spending cuts, a union has warned.

Unison said more than £10 million has been cut from spending on public conveniences over the past two years.

Some councils are spending 13% less on maintaining and repairing public conveniences, with the biggest cuts in London and the North West, said Unison.

Pool scare at primary school

Pupils and staff had to be evacuated from a primary school after an excessive amount of a swimming pool chemical was thrown into the school pool during a break-in.

Thames Valley Police officers attended Southcote Primary School in Reading, Berkshire, and everyone was immediately evacuated to the nearby Blessed Hugh Faringdon School as a precaution.

The offenders are believed to have broken into the building in Silchester Road overnight, police said.

Arrested for having gun tattoo

A man with a realistic-looking tattoo of a gun on his stomach had the real thing tucked into his waistband when he was arrested, police in the US revealed.

Police in Maine told the Morning Sentinel that 41-year-old Michael Smith, of Norridgewock, showed up at a sheriff’s deputy’s home on Thursday night. Police say he was crying and had been drinking.

Authorities say Smith told police he had a fight with his ex-girlfriend and had stolen prescription narcotics from her. He was charged with stealing drugs, and the gun was confiscated. He was released on bail.

Pizza delivery chain Domino’s is introducing its own version of Siri.

The firm plans to introduce a function on its mobile app that lets customers place orders by speaking with a computer-generated voice named Dom.

Officials said the updated app for iPhones and Android devices will deliver a “human-like, conversational” experience, but notes that it will take some time to work out the kinks in the technology.
