A 1941 Cadillac custom-built for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor is to be auctioned in New York City.

Dubbed The Duchess, the limousine features rose-coloured broadcloth upholstery, four jewellery cases and three cigar lighters.

It is estimated to fetch between $500,000 and $800,000 (€362,461 to €579,500) when it is sold on November 21 by Sotheby’s and RM Auctions.

General Motors delivered the limo to the Windsors at the Waldorf Astoria, where they had a suite. The duke paid $14,000 (€10,205) for it. It was one of the first Cadillacs to have power windows and is fitted with satin privacy curtains. (PA)

Kangaroo hops into airport

An injured kangaroo hopped into an airport in Melbourne and bounced into a terminal shop. Officials are not sure how the animal got inside the Qantas Airways domestic terminal after it was hit by a vehicle nearby.

Wildlife officers tranquillised the kangaroo and took it to a vet for treatment.

Last year a kangaroo was found bouncing around one of the airport’s busy car parks. (PA)

Liverpool pigeon clean-up

A giant “pigeon” greeted shoppers in Liverpool to draw their attention to the impact they have on the city.

The man wearing a bird costume was part of a special awareness week urging the public and businesses to “Love Where You Live”.

The campaign is aimed at drawing attention to environmental issues affecting the city centre such as pigeons.

A spokesman for Liverpool’s Business Improvement District (BID), which is behind the campaign, said: “It takes Liverpool’s street cleansing team 80-plus staff hours per day to clean droppings from streets and buildings, at a cost of more than £100,000 (€117,000) a year.” (PA)

Elephants kill veteran ranger

Three elephants have trampled a park ranger to death during an anti-poaching patrol in a Zimbabwe nature reserve where more than 102 of the animals have been poisoned with cyanide in past weeks.

The veteran ranger was charged by the elephants when separated from colleagues in Hwange National Park.

The National Parks Department said Lovemore Maphosa, 61, was out on a 10-day foot patrol.

Four poachers arrested in the past month have received up to 16-year jail terms for using cyanide at water holes to kill elephants and saw off tusks for the illegal ivory market.

Elephants are known to be skittish and aggressive especially when family groups are in danger. (AP)

Pumpkin power for sailor

A contemporary artist has become the first person to sail a hollowed-out pumpkin across the Solent.

Dmitri Galitzine set sail from Stokes Bay, Gosport, Hampshire, in the boat made out of a 500kg pumpkin.

He arrived an hour and 56 minutes later at Wootton Creek Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight.

The pumpkin was grown by Mark O’Hanlon, winner of the UK’s heaviest pumpkin title in 2004. It was fitted with a small outboard motor which enabled the gourd to travel at about 1 or 2 knots.

The journey went so well for Galitzine, 27, from London that he turned around and sailed back to Trafalgar Wharf marina in Portsmouth where he had prepared for the event. (PA)
