Statues of prominent historical figures in Britain, including Sir Winston Churchill, were fitted with straitjackets in morning raids to highlight issues of mental illness.

The stunt was carried out by Channel 4 before its season of primetime programmes looking at the stigma of mental health, 4 Goes Mad.

The figures were kitted out with bespoke jackets emblazoned with the name of an illness from which each of them was said to have suffered.

Other notable statues targeted in the guerrilla raids were Florence Nightingale in London’s Waterloo Place, Charles Darwin in Shrewsbury and Samuel Johnson in Lichfield.

First the bra

A revolutionary discovery is rewriting the history of underwear: some 600 years ago, women wore bras.

Archaeologists have found four linen bras dating from the Middle Ages in an Austrian castle. The bra were thought to be only 100 years old as women abandoned the tight corset.

Instead, it appears the bra came first, followed by the corset, followed by the reinvented bra.

Although the linen garments were unearthed in 2008, they did not make news until now, the archaeologist responsible for the discovery said. Researching the items and carbon dating them to make sure they were genuine took some time.

Bears in pedalo jam

European brown bear Nellie and seven-month-old son Loki could bear-ly believe their luck when they were given a pedal-boat smeared with their favourite jam and grapes to keep them entertained.

But the pair soon forgot about the food as they splashed around onboard, in an apparent attempt to learn to sail.

The bears got the pedalo to help keep them active at Blair Drummond Safari Park, near Stirling in the UK. Keeper Nicola McCleery daubed jam on the vessel and hid grapes inside. However, according to Ms McCleery, their favourite treat is elephant dung.

“They love it for some reason. They roll around in it and absolutely stink for the rest of the day,” she added.
