A man was badly injured yesterday afternoon while working on the new Mellieħa bypass.

The police said the 36-year-old man from Żebbuġ was operating a steamroller (similar to those used when laying tarmac) at Ta’ Pennellu when the incident took place.

Sources said the machine went out of control when a mechanical problem developed. The man was injured when he jumped off the vehicle, fracturing his legs.

The police said the accident happened at 1.40pm.
