Recently, the Social Security Department informed me of the pension amounts I received in the first six months of this year and the amounts I am due to receive till the end of the year.

In all instances except for three times, the tax deducted at source was and will be the same, at €10. In two other payments when the half yearly bonus is paid, the tax withheld will be €30.

This leaves me with the payment due on December 22 – three days before Christmas. Last year, the pension was given to me on the 23rd and it was without any tax deduction. Perhaps there was a change of heart as this year the tax deducted will be €63.

Now how is that for a Christmas present?
