As the European football leagues draw to a close, with some titles already decided, I think it’s fair to say that of the more prominent leagues – English, Italian, German and Spanish – the Italian Serie A produces a very poor quality of football when compared with the others; little wonder that few of the world’s stars choose to display their skills at Italian clubs.

It’s a pity really because European competitions need strong Italian league teams. It is a conundrum, therefore, why the Italian national team is so good.

I have been a fan of Serie A for many years and will continue my allegiance but my loyalty is being sorely tested.
