Fr Mark Cauchi (May 3) is, of course, entitled to express his views regarding Malta’s National Day, but I object strongly to his sweeping statement – “In World War II they fought for the British because Malta at the time was a British Colony”.

Does he mean that we should not have defended our families and our country against the evil forces of Nazism and Fascism because we were not and could not have been independent at the time? Many countries in Europe were not even impolite to the Germans but still finished up being invaded and conquered and for years were treated like slaves until the British and American forces freed them. Does Fr Mark think that the Maltese should have helped to allow the enemy free access to our country?

Malta was on the brink of being invaded in 1941 and again in 1942 with disastrous results to everyone in Malta at the time especially if the invaders had been successful. Malta, defended by personnel from the British Isles and from the British Commonwealth, including thousands of Maltese soldiers, sailors and airmen, stood up to the dreaded Luftwaffe that had conquered a large part of Europe and succeeded in remaining unconquered and eventually to help in the Allied victory

Malta is proud of having done its duty.
