The consumer affairs authority has issued a public warning on a waterproofing company that it says is not honouring its guarantees.

Total Waterproofing Supplies, led by Marphil Gauci, was not living up to the guarantees given to its clients, the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority said yesterday.

It warned that Mr Gauci also gave clients false names and regularly changed his commercial operation name.

Earlier this year, The Times published a story on MG Waterproofing, also led by Mr Gauci, advertising its services through fliers to households, promoting its “metal liquid membrane” services at €7 per metre, with a 30-year guarantee.

The company’s services included mould and humidity removal from roofs and walls.

A number of customers who took up the offer discovered their houses still leaked when it rained.

Customers soon realised the “guarantee certificate” they had been given was invalid because it contained no company details.

In one case, the workman applying the membrane said he did not have a receipt book available and would send a receipt by post. It never arrived.

To add to the frustration, phone calls to complain were either ignored or the company owner refused to shoulder the blame, forcing them to refer the matter to the Consumers Association.

The consumer affairs watchdog referred to Small Claims Tribunal decisions, which ruled against Mr Gauci.

The Consumer Claims Tribunal had also ruled against Mr Gauci three times last year, it noted.
