I have just watched a video on the BBC website, taken at the Benghazi War Cemetery and the Benghazi British Military Cemetery, of armed men breaking headstones on graves of British and Commonwealth servicemen killed in World War II. It is absolutely horrendous. There is even a man on a ladder attacking a large crucifix with a hammer!

When Libya needed help, many brave men and women from many countries went to their aid – no-one stopped to say: “No, we cannot help because we are not Muslims”. Is this an example of the people to whom we have given their “freedom”?

I would like to think that the Libyan authorities, who have already apologised for this dreadful act of vandalism, will find out who these men are and punish them and, perhaps, make them repair the damage. I think I shall have a long wait…

For all his terrible crimes and faults, these war graves were never damaged in Muammar Gaddaffi’s time. Hmmm…
