Valletta Subbuteo Club started season 2012-2013 in style last weekend, winning all their games to claim the Grand Prix Trophy in Cardiff for the second consecutive year.

Valletta won their group after beating Hot Club Escosse and Cardiff B Team, both games finishing 4-0.

In the quarter-finals they faced Tiburones, of Spain, and won 3-0 before a last-four 3-1 victory over Italian club Sessana.

In the final, the City team faced Belgium’s Stembart who are currently the top-ranked team in the world rankings.

Valletta were not overwhelmed though and won with a convincing score of 3-1 to retain the GP Trophy title.

In individual categories, Joe Borg Bonaci, a Valletta player, went down narrowly in the final 1-0 to Chris Dheur, of Belgium, after shots.

Derek Conti qualified from the group stages and lost to Borg Bonaci in the last eight, Jean Carl Tabone went down to Dheur in the semi-finals and Matt Lampitt (one of Valletta’s foreign players) bowed out in the quarter-finals, also losing to Dheur.

Chris Thomas, another City player in Cardiff, was knocked out from the Last 16, losing on shots to team-mate Jason Pisani who also played in the veterans event.

The next international tournament for Valletta will be the Champions League in Greece between October 27 and 28.

This will be the first time for the club to participate in the prestigious competition after the Europa League in Rome, two years ago.
