So Simon Busuttil is to contest the general election. I am sure he will be elected with a handsome first count vote but MEP David Casa is likely in for a drubbing and will have to stay in Brussels. We shall see.

There is one thing seriously wrong with Busuttil, apart from the gaffes he made, as laid out so well by Alfred Mifsud. Busuttil was Eddie Fenech Adami’s choice. And, let’s face it, Fenech Adami is no reliable weathervane when it comes to making good choices. I mean, Lawrence Gonzi is also his choice, over John Dalli. And Gonzi has driven us into a hole while Dalli always gave us good budgets as Finance Minister. Compare that to what we get today. Fenech Adami chose abysmally.

Dalli had unfortunately made a cardinal sin. The humiliating 1996 electoral loss Fenech Adami suffered was attributed to VAT being brought in a year late. Fenech Adami anointed Gonzi as his successor. And look where that brought us. Fenech Adami is usually quite voluble in making his opinions known but he has not said anything about Gonzi’s floundering in trying to hold the party together.

Gonzi also seems to be threatening democracy and we have heard nothing from Fenech Adami about that either.

Fenech Adami also anointed Busuttil. How do we know Busuttil would be any better than Gonzi? His judgement is flawed. Just consider his criticism of the Labour Party’s Karmenu Vella, which turns out to be criticism based on a misquotation, which Vella had asked the paper reporting it to correct. Is that what the PN wants, a leader who will be caught out making flawed cases? He has already been caught out making awful gaffes.
