Science in the City, Malta’s science and arts festival, is back in the capital, with art and entertainment all linked to science.

The festival is expected to offer a number of free and interactive events, from street art installations to graffiti art, music concerts, art exhibitions, children’s shows, live experiments, talks, tech areas and more.

As part of the pan-European event called Researchers’ Night, Science in the City is running over 25 events that cater for diverse tastes and ages.

Visitors can learn about insects surrounded by a 10-foot-tall butterfly, while inside a house they can make a cup of coffee using pedal power or see the latest technology in making things work around a house without lifting a finger.

A tech area sees robots, art installations and other activities coming to life. Live experiments will be run in different areas around Valletta and a children’s area will keep young ones hooked on science for hours. People will also be able to participate in some of the experiments, highlighting how science can be fun and part of our everyday life.

The activities will take place in Valletta, running from the Upper Barrakka and St James Cavalier, down both Merchants and Republic Streets, till St George’s Square (Palace Square) and the Old Market.

The festival opens the doors of Valletta for everyone to meet researchers from the University of Malta and artists, and participate in the interactive demonstrations, discussions, workshops and children’s activities.

Researchers will be present at different venues to talk about the science behind the activities. A special event will be held at the King’s Own Band Club, where anyone can pop over for a drink and chat with researchers about the science of food, the universe, or some unique facts about Maltese blood. It will highlight the appeal of pursuing a career in research.

The University’s Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT) is supporting this second edition of Science in the City, since the event shows the value and usefulness of science and research in Malta.

Investment in research and development is a guarantee for the successful future of our country. The RIDT actively seeks funds and support from private and corporate bodies, private individuals and University alumni to expand the University’s research studies.

Science in the City is supported by the EU FP7 Programme and the Malta Arts Fund. The event is coordinated by the University of Malta, in partnership with the Chamber of Scientists, Valletta local council, Meusac, Malta Council for Science and Technology, Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, PBS, Where’s Everybody, Valletta 2018 Foundation, Notte Bianca, iCreatemotion, Microsoft, St James Cavalier and the RIDT.

Science in the City will be held on September 27 from 6pm.
