Nationalist MEP David Casa wrote a very interesting article in The Times (January 10) in which he stated: “The vulnerability of the European Union’s VAT system to fraud has been a major concern.”

Shouldn’t this learned MEP look into his own backyard and that of the Nationalist Party’s and give us, Maltese taxpayers, his view regarding the major fraud of €20 million that took place in 2009?

Can he inform us, taxpayers, when the stolen €20 million plus penalties will be returned to the public coffers?

Can he confirm how many of those responsible for such theft have been convicted and made to pay back the stolen millions? Aren’t these stolen millions of major concern to the Maltese electorate?

Furthermore, can the MEP enlighten us about the case that took place a few years ago involving fraud in sugar importation?

Another newspaper has on two occasions published an article on this fraud. The article stated that the investigators, Olaf (the European anti-fraud office), discovered that import/export documents were falsified and that a total of up to €30 million in all the sugar cases under investigation could be involved!

Tax evasion amounting to €2 million was also mentioned in this newspaper report.

It is common knowledge that our country (that is, we taxpayers) has been fined “in excess of €7 million but it has been brought down to €1.2 million after negotiations with the European Commission”.

So would Casa care to comment about these stolen millions of euros, which are still missing?
