Eighteen charitable organisations have received donations from the American Foundation for Maltese Charities in a ceremony hosted by US Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley.

Every dollar collected by the foundation was distributed to institutions that care for people with special needs, help the poor and elderly, work with unwed mothers and drug addicts and assist vulnerable children.

The foundation is run entirely by volunteers. None of them receive remuneration for their services and no money destined for a Maltese charity was used to cover administrative costs.

The founders of the American Foundation for Maltese Charities were all Maltese immigrants who wanted to share their prosperity with those less fortunate in their homeland.

Since its inception in the early 1960s, the foundation has donated more than $1.5 million.

“The foundation’s many donors exemplify the commitment to volunteerism, solidarity and compassion that both the Maltese and American peoples share,” said Ms Abercrombie-Winstanley.
