The news item Bus Drivers To Go Tieless (July 17) must have been somewhat confusing to foreigners without knowledge of the English language.

After stating that the General Workers’ Union had instructed drivers of Arriva buses not to wear ties in the hot weather, it appears that some drivers had already been instructed not to wear ties.

The concluding paragraph of this news snippet goes on to say that the decision (of the GWU) comes “after a number of drivers had broken their ties (what a lovely pun) with the GWU....”

Perhaps a foreigner would have suggested they throw their ties away rather than breaking them!
