Indie bands Three Stops to China, Hey Sus and Clandestines will be holding a live performance to welcome the summer gig season at the British Legion.

Three Stops to China, who will be hosting the event, are now firmly established with their particular brand of grunge with a touch of punk. Guitarist David Grech Urpani said the trio had been meaning to play with Clandestines and Hey Sus for a while.

“We knew it was the next logical step for us as far as gig collaborations go. It just took us a while to finally go for it, because we were busy perfecting a set list which would work best within this context,” he said.

This will be the first summer gig for all three bands, and both set list and set-up will revolve around this seasonal theme.

“It’s basically going to be one big party celebrating summer. Expect surfer, dreamy shoegaze tunes to dominate the night, and perhaps even a surprise or two,” Grech Urpani said.

The set list, Grech Urpani adds, doesn’t feel particularly new to them as they’ve been playing it underground for months. However, those who are familiar with the band mostly through their EP Rite, or through the Coach & Horses gigs, “are in for a surprise”.

“This gig marks a new chapter for our sound, so it’s practically all new material,” Grech Urpani concludes.

The three-piece band Clandestines comes fresh from an appearance at the first Sofar Sounds gig in Malta, a series of music events that are held in intimate, alternate spaces and a line-up that is kept secret till the end.

Their recent album Saturday As Usual, attracted both local and international interest, with some of the tracks being featured on a number of foreign indie music blogs.

Hey Sus are known for a blend of indie/surfer pop. Relative newcomers to the scene, this will be the trio’s first gig of the year, following a very well-received performance at Coach & Horses last year.

The gig takes place on Saturday at 7pm at the British Legion, Valletta. €7 tickets are available at the door.
