‘Hidden aspects of caring in professional contexts’ is a course aimed at providing educators with training in emotional intelligence skills relating to relationships with children and young people.

It consists of six three-hour lectures organised by Malta University Holding Company Ltd., starting on October 12 at the University Residence, Robert Mifsud Bonnici Street, Lija.

The course will cover the areas of models of caring, principles of emotional intelligence, awareness and well-being and prevention of child abuse and neglect.

Participants will deal with topics such as reflecting about their own experiences of caring to improve self-formative practice as a continuous reflection-in/on-action; listening, analysing, and interpreting their own and others’ emotions to manage groups and improve the effectiveness of their intervention; coping as an opportunity to learn and grow; and becoming more aware of their educational models and caring style.

The course should be of interest to teachers, learning support assistants, parents, psychologists, social workers, counsellors, youth workers, professionals involved in the field of education with children and youngpeople, care workers and the public.

This is an experiential skills-based programme and will involve a high level of participation by those attending the course.

The course co-ordinator and lecturer is Erika Ferrario from the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy.

Dr Ferrario is a lecturer within the Department of Human Sciences of the University’s Faculty of Education and a visiting researcher at the University of Malta’s European Centre for Educational Resilience and Socio-Emotional Health.

Her areas of specialisation include emotional intelligence, non-violent communication, resilience, gender differences, counselling and careers guidance, group dynamics, leadership and conflicts management.

A certificate of attendance will be given to participants who attend at least 80 per cent of the sessions.

The registration deadline is October 3.
